We have heard a lot about self driving cars and that they will take over the world but how? How does the car see the road, obstacles on the road, other cars, pedestrians and stray animals?
An Australian self driving car startup, Zoox has recently put a series of videos on twitter showing what their self driving cars see when driving. I had trouble embedding the videos in this email so for this week the newsletter post will be hosted on my website.
Here is the full post along with all the videos (they are very short, 10 to 20 seconds each).
Zoox was founded in Melbourne in 2014 however it is now headquartered in Foster City California. Their most recent capital raising was for US$500 million (AU$730 million) on a valuation of US$3.2 Billion (AU$4.7 Billion). In December 2018, Zoox became the first company to be awarded a license to provide self driving vehicle services to the general public.
Zoox's planned vehicle design can drive both forwards and backwards, while the interior cabin is laid out with passengers facing each other. Their hope is that this design will foster greater social interactions between passengers.
Paying it Forward
